What is a ledger?

A ledger is the running record of all transactions affecting an account, with a balance carried forward after each entry. A customer ledger shows every invoice you raised, every payment received and every credit note, ending in the balance they owe. A statement of account is that ledger presented to the customer for a period. Ledgers are the backbone of knowing who owes what, and to whom you owe.
